About ChoirWorks
During its three-decade long journey ChoirWorks has spread harmony throughout the world from Leiria, the ancient UNESCO City of Music in western Portugal across central and eastern Europe to Montreal in Canada’s far eastern Quebec province, all while working out of Brisbane.
Starting as an outreach project of the historic St Andrew’s Uniting Church on the corner of Ann and Creek Streets in Brisbane in 1996, it was named St Andrew’s Concert Choir but later changed to Brisbane Concert Choir at St Andrew’s. It remained based at the church until the Covid pandemic in 2020.
Under the direction of Dr Debra Shearer-Dirié the choir rehearsed in a city arcade and recorded and performed outdoors during the pandemic. Despite Covid restrictions, the choir expanded its horizons and explored new concert venues to capitalise on larger audiences it began attracting. This change of profile also led to a decision to change the name to ChoirWorks.
It is now a registered national charity with DGR status which allows tax-deductible donations that are greatly assisting choir funding. In the hope current international tensions subside, ChoirWorks is planning a concert tour of either Japan or the Balkans for September 2027.
